The Mealworm Separating Machine is mainly used to quickly and accurately separate mealworms after breeding, achieving effective screening of frass (insect manure), live worms of different sizes, and dead worms in one operation. By replacing screens with different mesh sizes, the machine can also be used to separate pupae from worms, meeting screening requirements at different growth stages.
This machine is widely applicable to large-scale mealworm farms, feed processing plants, and insect protein–related industries, featuring a wide application range and strong practicality. In addition, our company offers three different models of Mealworm Separating Machines, with the main difference being processing capacity, allowing customers to choose the most suitable model according to their breeding scale and production requirements.
Type 1: 5th generation mealworm separating machine
The 5th Generation Mealworm Separating Machine combines high efficiency with consistent separation quality. It significantly reduces manual intervention, allowing operators to process mealworms more easily and reliably.
The machine can handle fresh insects at a rate of 400–600 kg per hour (excluding the color sorter) and pre-roasted insects at 500–700 kg per hour (including insects selected by the color sorter), delivering fast, precise, and standardized sorting for large production environments.

Mealworm separating machine features

- Integrates frass removal, skin cleaning, dust collection, worm size grading, and pupae and dead worm separation into one system.
- Supports both combined operation and individual function control to match different working requirements.
- Adjustable airflow design to adapt to different worm conditions and improve sorting accuracy.
- Replaceable screens allow flexible separation of small worms, large worms, pupae, and adult beetles.
- Specialized pupae screen achieves a separation purity of over 90%.
- High processing efficiency, with performance comparable to more than 20 manual workers.
- Uses a copper-core motor for reliable performance and low daily power consumption.
- Equipped with caster wheels for convenient indoor movement and positioning.

Operation guidelines for the mealworm sorter
- For easy movement within the breeding room, the machine is equipped with bearing-mounted wheels and swivel casters. When operating, ensure the machine is leveled and lock the swivel casters (press the brakes) to maintain stable operation. Otherwise, mealworms may be directed to one side, affecting separation quality and speed.
- Pupae, dead insects, and adult insects should be separated at temperatures of 25°C or above. Lower temperatures may make the separation less effective.
- Always close the insect hopper before pouring in insects or pupae to prevent mealworms from crawling freely inside the machine before it starts.
- The 5th generation machine offers multiple functions. Users can flexibly adjust settings according to their needs, activating some or all functions, and properly place cloth bags and containers to collect different components.
- Do not directly attach a large bag to the excrement outlet.

Type 2: 6th generation mealworm separator
The 6th Generation Mealworm Separator streamlines multiple steps—screening insect droppings, removing dust and exoskeletons, and sorting insects of different sizes—into a single, continuous workflow.
This design ensures a cleaner, more organized process while significantly reducing manual handling. The machine’s fully enclosed system also captures debris in dust-proof cloth bags, promoting a hygienic and environmentally friendly operation.

Mealworm separator advantages

- Dual-layer sorting belts with adjustable speed and airflow for precise separation of large, medium, and small insects.
- Interchangeable droppings and size sieves for flexible operation and easy maintenance.
- Dust-proof covers on the main unit and accessible control box for convenient observation and servicing.
- Simultaneous separation of useful insects and dead insects, saving time and improving overall productivity.
- High processing capacity: 800–1,000 kg/hour for fresh mealworms (excluding color sorter) and 1,000–1,400 kg/hour for pre-roasted mealworms (including color sorter selection).
How does the mealworm separator work?
- The mealworm mixture is first screened to separate insect droppings, while exoskeletons and dust are extracted into collection bags.
- The mixture then passes through the sorting belt for the first round of separation: healthy mealworms fall into the lower sieve, while other material moves to the secondary separator.
- In the secondary separation, healthy mealworms are returned to the main unit to join those from the first separation for sorting into large, medium, and small sizes.
- Material that falls during the secondary separation is sent to the color sorter, where dead insects are removed.

Type 3: 10th generation mealworm sorting machine
The 10th Generation Mealworm Separator is designed for highly efficient and precise processing of mealworms. From feeding to seeing the sorted mealworms, the process takes only 9 seconds.
The machine is equipped with a dust extraction system throughout the screening process, protecting operators from airborne dust, which can cause long-term health issues such as rhinitis, bronchitis, pneumoconiosis, and even lung cancer. Using this machine not only increases productivity but also ensures a safer, healthier working environment.

Mealworm sorting machine benefits

- Precise sorting: Separates large, medium, and small mealworms for accurate classification.
- Durable components: Reduced vibration impact protects switches and motors, extending the machine’s lifespan.
- Environmentally comfortable: Noise reduced from 100 decibels to around 70 decibels for a quieter workspace.
- High-quality output: Screening process minimizes pupae damage by over 80%, preserving insect quality.
- Improved efficiency: Overall screening speed and effectiveness increased by approximately 20%.

Live vs inactive insect separation
The separation of live insects from inactive ones (dead insects and pupae) relies on the principle that live insects can crawl and use their claws to grip the separation belt, while inactive insects cannot. However, there are three situations in which live insects may mistakenly fall into the inactive insect category:
- Aging insects: Older insects that are about to pupate may still move but cannot properly grip the belt, causing them to fall into the inactive section.
- Solución: Perform multiple rounds of separation and slow down the belt speed to give older insects enough time to hold onto the belt.
- Diseased insects: Insects with poor health have reduced mobility and grip, leading them to fall into the inactive group.
- Solución: Similarly, multiple rounds of separation with a slower belt speed can help recover these insects.
- Overloading: Feeding too many insects at once can cause crowding; lower insects occupy the belt, leaving upper insects without space to grip, causing them to fall.
- Solución: Reduce the feed quantity and perform multiple separation cycles for the inactive section.

By understanding these conditions and adjusting belt speed and feed volume, operators can optimize live insect recovery and ensure more accurate sorting.
Flexible speed control on the mealworm screening machine
The mealworm screening machine offers fully adjustable sorting speeds to meet different operational needs. When screening pupae or adult insects, the speed can be set slower to prevent damage, while the speed for healthy adult larvae can be increased to improve efficiency.
The speed of the live and dead insect separation belt is also adjustable: when processing older insects or batches with more dead insects, slowing the belt allows more time for accurate separation; for batches with many strong adult worms, increasing the speed boosts productivity.
With a simple twist of a control, operators can easily adjust the speed—faster or slower—giving full flexibility to optimize sorting quality and efficiency.

Conclusión
The Mealworm Separating Machine efficiently sorts mealworms by size, separates pupae, dead insects, droppings, and debris in seconds, and protects operators with a built-in dust extraction system. Adjustable speeds and multi-round separation ensure high recovery of healthy insects, minimal damage, and optimized workflow.
